  • Good Intention, Questionable Results!

Here we go again, Governor Paterson of New York teamed up with George Soros to form a Back-to-School program for welfare families. Paterson used $140,000,000 of our stimulus money and Soros added another $30,000,000 of his own to provide approximately $200 per family to help them buy their kids school supplies. Sadly it has been reported there was an immediate run on flat screens, cigarettes, beer and other non school related purchases. I hope the majority of the families were responsible but shame on those who were not.

By the way this was CASH money added to their benefit cards with no way to control how it was spent.

      Re: Good Intention, Questionable Results!

It may have been even worse than I thought. Now some are reporting it was $200 per child. Here is a post I took from another site:

      ----

I've never seen anything more stupid in my life.

I understand that people need help sometimes, but when we were struggling to keep a roof over our head and make sure our girls had school clothes and supplies, I would put 10 bucks a week away out of our paychecks so we could hit the sales just before school started again. We shopped at dollar stores, went to amvets and consignment shops, and prepared in advance for the kids.

To just give 200.00 per sperm donation just gets on my last nerve. I know someone with 7 kids (2 parent household, both working full time) and because they qualified for food stamps, they got handed 1400 bucks! That is ridiculous. I work full time too. I stopped accepting sperm donations as soon as I realized it was either work or welfare (I CHOSE work.)

Maybe I need to quit my job and go on foodstamps too... Its not like I'm at a high level of pay anyway and I'm still young enough to spawn more crumbsnatchers... I see a business opportunity here.

      DUH

I see people getting very defensive. I UNDERSTAND what it's like to need a little helping hand, but last night Walmart was PACKED with shoppers with their bennie cards buying up the stores! Very few school supplies were in the baskets let me tell you. A half hour of standing in line while benefits were used on everything from jewelry to televisions to junk food and pop did not make me a happy camper. After that, maybe you can see why some of my compassion went down the drain.

This should have been issued just like the WIC program. With school supply lines so that those who are NOT school shopping don't have to wait to watch the handouts.

Well you get what you vote for!
You wanted change! so..all of gainfully employed will only have "CHANGE" left in their pockets after all the illegals get their money and perks!

Hmmmmm I wonder???? If I go to Canada and give up my American citizenship then sneak back to AZ. Will I be able to get all those benefits the illegals get? It's definitely a lot more than I'm receiving now! And they are excused from paying taxes! ANY TAXES!!!!

I chose Canada as their borders are now easier to slip through...Oh I'll also change my name to Miguel.

        Oh in the local news....

two Mexican detectives were investigating the murder of Juan Gonzales.
"How was he killed ?" asked one detective...
"With a golf gun" the other replied
        "A golf gun? what's a golf gun?"
"I don't know but it sure made a hole in Juan"

Mark, as I read your post I was doubtful about the accuracy. I expected to find errors as I searched the Internet for more information. There's no way the government would just credit accounts if such money was intended to help children going back to school. Vouchers specific for school supplies or clothing would be the only way this idea could be implimented, otherwise the funds could be misused.
" The no-strings-attached money went to families receiving food stamps or welfare.
Every child between 3 and 17 was eligible for $200, which worked out to 813,845 kids across the state - including 498,866 in the city."

          Sickening!

I am not doubting you, I am just a "number junkie" and would be interested in reading the original source where those numbers came from,

I didn't like that sentence either, it suggests the worst behavior from the folks who got the money, and I don't know if that will be proved but if there is no accounting for how the money was spent I suspect some if not most will be misused simply because it can be.There had to be a better way to get the supplies and or clothing to the kids in need than hand over money to the parent/s. This program if the money is spent on flat screens and other nonesentials might work out better than the stimulus program. Government money that was given to people who spent it rather than save it. None of this is making sense anymore, I'm so confused! What a mess. I feel sorry for the kids who were supposed to benefit and got nothing because the adults spent it on themselves, which in some cases must have happened.
Check out this link for that reference about misuse of the Back To School money,

I'm with you on the JOBS!!! I also remember an America that made most of what it consumed. Life was much less complicated without ipods, cell phones and all the other electronics we have now. Folks worked those factory jobs and were able to pay bills, save some money and buy cars, homes, pay college tuition, even take a vacation. Just look at most of us now. What a mess. The transiton to made in china, mexico, sri lanka, vietnam on our clothes, car parts and almost everything else we consume contributed to the weakening of the AMerican consumer and economy in my opinion. Granted there was a lot of air and water pollution years ago and people got sick and died, but in an effort to clean things up we went overboard. I don't see a way back, a way out of the monsters we've created EPA, OSHA and other government agencies that go beyond keeping people and the environment safe and clean. I can't picture an America that can sustain itself and grow without manufacturing what it consumes. I believe this is the single most important issue facing us.

In saying "it has been reported" it implies there are no statistics. The only reason it came to light was because of the massive lines at the Western Union offices and other stores which reporting massive shopping sprees for non-school items. Because nothing is being tracked there is no way to know where the money is spent except in those instances where the welfare cards were used to purchase the non-school items. It seems some where worried the money would run out before they used it so they cashed it out at Western Union.

I'm not sure why you are trying to compare California to New York as this is not really about either State. The truth of the matter is, every taxpayer in the United States paid into the stimulus money which went to New York (as in other States). New York felt a responsibility to give all welfare recipients $200 per kid to buy school supplies. While the idea was commendable, the execution was moronic. This is just one more reason why the government should not be involved in any business.

With a welfare benefit card you cannot purchase tobacco products, alcoholic beverages and certain luxury food items. They are good for food items.

I think that you also cannot use them to purchase jewlery, electronic "toys" and TV's.

The news people today do not seem to use the five rules of reporting taught in Journalism 101

                          WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY

Since ALL news outlets, print and electronic, have switched to become profit centers the journalists have become "content providers".

Be careful what you read and see on TV and especially the Internet.

                            Agreed,

My point was that since I live in NY and you live in Cali, we both know our states....

We both no that Government is way to deep in each of these states.,

So ya, I meant that each state has way to much PORK ..

Wasn't picking on NYS OR CALI per to say, but they are not alone for sure, there are way many other states with crazy stuff going on
