I understand this film was during the early days of the atomic age, but I always found the protagonist is the story to be a hypocrite. Stop blowing each other up or we will blow you up.

The good ones leave you changed just a little, and usuall for the better.
Indeed. The arts can elevate which is why they are so important to society.

      Couple more movies to add:

All Quiet on the Western Front
      The Grapes of Wrath

Spiff, the movie was severly limited by it's time. The threat of total global destruction got the attention of movie goers, as opposed to an alternative where the aliens render us harmless in a peaceful manner. When the alien is taken to walter reed hospital the doctors are seen smoking! When the Mom at the bording house where the alien is staying can't find a babysitter for her ten year old "johnny", she doesn't hesitate to accept the offer by the alien who she has known for several hours! I liked how the movie opened the minds of people to the possibility that we are not alone in the universe and not all mighty.

The Grapes of Wrath, Midnight Express and several other mentioned continue to have a strong impact on viewers. I do think we are changed just a bit after seeing these movies. We appreciate of freedom, safety, lifestyle and blessings all the more. I forget how many glasses of water I drank after watching, "Flight of the Phoenix", showered with one eye open and the door locked after, "Psycho", still won't go in salt water after, "Jaws".

Shenandoah with Jimmy Stewart. First saw it in the 1960s and still watch it now.

The Quiet Man is one of the few my wife will watch with me and has very funny scenes. I like El Dorado/ Rio Bravo, McLintock is a funny movie, The shootist was really good, Chisum, I like most of his movies if not all his movies.

Many of his movies had some comedy mixed in, but "The Searchers" was all business!
