  • The Future

I recently returned from Kansas City. They hold the Skills competition out there every year. Me and two other instructors were privileged to escort four of our finest students out there to compete. It was a memorable experience. Words alone can not describe the atmosphere there. The competition was held a Barttle hall, a humongous expo center in the center of the city. The competition floor is larger than 8 football fields. There were thousands of people there from the competitors to their advisors, family, organizers and Skills officials. I made a short video of the competitions that you may find interesting. Remember that the kids you see are our future. They are the ones that will fix your car, cut your hair, build your dreams, make the machines that build the future. They are the best of the best and we should all be proud of them and their accomplishments.

Sure looks like that event was worthy of some tv coverage, but with rewarding programs like "kate plus 8" and "housewives of nj" airtime is a precious commodity.

Thanks for posting, it was nice to see so many young people involved and enthusiastic about their work.

It did get coverage on the Missouri stations. We took two teams. One finished 9th and the other 24th.

Nice job, NHM! It sure brings back old memories. I was the State Exec. Director for Post Secondary in Mn. for a few years. I saw lots of talent that is busy taking care of our world now. Thanks for sharing.

              Re: The Future

I feel bad for the guy working on the over-the-range microwave at 2:57. I spent years repairing consumer electronics/small appliances and you could see the inevitable demise of repairing such items due to new cost vs repair cost. It always felt wrong to tell a customer that their 15 month old $1700 plasma needed $800 in parts. The guy in the video would have a better and more lucrative future installing microwaves, dishwashers, and flat panel TVs (wall mount). No joke. The company I worked for recognized this fact and by the time I left, my time was spent 50% repair and 50% install. I still do repair but only for friends and family as a hobby to keep my edge. Overheard a manf rep at one training seminar mention that his company might eliminate warranty repairs due to all the overhead involved and instead offer customers a replacement while under warranty. This was a large consumer electronics company and this would apply to all products. Hasn't happened yet but probably will.
