Kind of scrapping the bottom of the barrel compared to what they could be getting by holding the banks and big business accountable for their part in doing business on American soil.
Last ditch effort going for crumbs.
        I'm next I 'spose.

There has been a definite increase in audits (30% last I checked) and the powers that be looking for taxes.

I kind of think they wanted to make a public example out of Snipes. Don't know all of the particulars but....

What does the U.S. gain in the big picture by jailing a person that isn't linked to organized crime for simply not filing?

Might be because they are hiding behind "Not Filing" if they were to file the punishment could be worse.

Kind of like not giving the field sobriety test to an officer.Your automatically getting your California drivers license suspended.

Only one jailed is Snipes to my knowledge.

He got 3 years at McKean Federal Correctional Institution in Lewis Run, Pennsylvania.

And no, there is NO WAY I believe he will do close to that.

I was thinking everyone comes out better if they just put a heavy fine on him. What happens otherwise?

Pay to keep him there & he's more likely to file?

If they fine him enough, they get money and he's more likely to file.

Seems they may be using old laws for current situations. Like I said though, don't know all of the particulars.

P.S. They'll take you're license on the spot here in Nunya too for breathalyzer refusal.

                      Re: Pattern?

This is the IRS case I've tried to follow. An international bank (UBS) was forced to give the government names of people for whom the bank had sheltered money to avoid taxes. The IRS didn't release all the names they received since UBS didn't give them a complete list and they figured if they didn't use heavy handed methods they'd hook a lot more fish, assuming that the cheats, who know who they are, would not want to bet that their names aren't on the list and would come forward on their own with reduced penalties for doing so. I've got to agree with the logic behind their approach, but I'd rather they hang um all by their ba-ls.

Some more recently in the news. Wondering if our government is quietly turning the screws on us.

The first story is the goverment protecting us from nissian trying to avoid paying their fair share.

The second story is about a local city goverment that didn't pay paroll tax and now cant find where the money went.

What do you mean about screwing us? I assume its directed at the IRS?
I mean I know theire fees are way too high and I called to tell them so. I had a penaly of 150.00 over 15.00 or 20 bucks. they removed the penalty and the lady said it had been computer generated. She was nice and helpful although the waiting time on the phone was excessive.....but she was sweet!!!!
