    Re: Madness

The depraved have no regard for laws! Criminals have no regard for laws! Our country is not civilized as proven by this tragic event. Law abiding citizens need to be armed, well trained in the use of firearms, and prepared to defend themselves and their loved ones.

P.S., Violent crime in Australia has increased since it's gun ban.

Britain and Australia top U.S. in violent crime
Now you grasping at straws Frank there is a lot of difference between killing twenty children in cold blood and car theft and home burglaries and we haven`t had a massacre since 1996 when our Prime Minister cared more about the people and banned the sale of semi and automatic guns in Australia as has happened in the majority of civilized countries but your personal civil rights seem to be more important as you have prostituted the second amendment over the last two hundred years and you allknow it

how many more laws do you need, one is not to have a gun on a school campus, (IT IS A GUN FREE ZONE)
The Gun Free School Zones Act states:[6]

          (A) It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm that has moved in or that otherwise affects interstate or foreign commerce at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone. ...

(B), it shall be unlawful for any person, knowingly or with reckless disregard for the safety of another, to discharge or attempt to discharge a firearm that has moved in or that otherwise affects interstate or foreign commerce at a place that the person knows is a school zone

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun-Fre...es_Act_of_1990
there is more to it but the two main lines in it, (much of the other wording is to clarifier the law from a previous edition of it)

you are not to kill people,
he broke two of the major laws on the books, so what will more laws do?

IF guns and para millitary dress, ere really the problem ,then when the police showed up with there M16's then hundreds more should have been dead,

            Re: Madness

All countries have problems with crime. Laws are good for those only willing to follow them. The Australian laws, below, sound much like our own across the states. With restricted guns the Australians have found alternative ways to kill, in addition to firearms:

Childers Palace Fire - In June 2000, drifter and con-artist Robert Long started a fire at the Childers Palace backpackers hostel that killed 15 people.

Monash University shooting - In October 2002, Huan Yun Xiang, a student, shot his classmates and teacher, killing two and injuring five.

Melbourne gangland killings - 36 underworld figures murdered so far in gang related violence between 1998 and 2010.

            Effects on firearm laws

            • Port Arthur Massacre - Semi-automatic rifles and pump action/self-loading shotguns were banned from civilians and a genuine reason was required for all other firearms. Licensing is also introduced, and both a firearms license and a buyers permit are necessary to legally purchase a firearm. Furthermore, an acceptable reason must be stated on the permit for buying the weapon, and a minimum 28 day "cooling off" period must be enforced before the issuing of the license.
            • Monash University shooting - Pistols restricted to .38 calibre and magazine capacity restricted to ten rounds maximum unless under special circumstances. Furthermore, pistol barrels are restricted to a minimum of 120 mm (4.72 inches) and revolver barrels to a minimum of 100 mm (3.94 inches) to make pistols harder to conceal.
I also found this helpful breakdown:

            • 28 April 1996 - Port Arthur massacre - Martin Bryant killed 35 at Port Arthur, Tasmania and injured 21 others in a shooting spree.[36]
            • 7 September 1996 - British tourist Brian Hagland was murdered by Aaron Martin at Bondi Beach.[37]
            • 14 September 1996 - Keli Lane was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of her two day old daughter, Tegan, who she had concealed.
            • 10 October 1996 - Tjandamurra O'Shane was set alight in a school playground in Cairns, Queensland by unemployed drifter Paul Wade Streeton.
            • 18 May 1997 - champion waterskier Jason Burton was stabbed to death while trying to break up a fight at the General Bourke Hotel in Parramatta, NSW, by Emad Sleiman.[38]
            • 15 June 1997 - Jaidyn Leskie was murdered and found dumped in a dam near Moe, Victoria (unsolved).
            • 6 October 1997 - Bega schoolgirl murders - 14-year-old Lauren Barry and 16-year-old Nichole Collins were kidnapped, raped, tortured and murdered by New Zealand-born career criminal Lindsay Beckett and Victorian prison escapee Leslie Camilleri.
            • 16 January 1998 to 15 June 2009 - Melbourne gangland killings - A series of 35 murders of crime figures and their associates that began with the slaying of Alphonse Gangitano in his home, most likely by Jason Moran, the latest victim being Des Moran who was murdered in Ascot Vale on 15 June 2009.
            • 12 June 1998 and 19 June 1998 - Mark Valera tortured and murdered Albion Park shopkeeper David O'Hearn and former Wollongong Lord Mayor Frank Arkell. Mark's sister Belinda van Krevel later 'asked' boyfriend Keith Schreiber to murder her father Jack van Krevel in retaliation for alleged sexual assault claims.
            • 16 August 1998 - Victorian police officers Gary Silk and Rodney Miller were shot dead in an ambush by Bendali Debs and Jason Joseph Roberts in the Moorabbin Police murders.
            • 3 February 1999 - Phillip John McCormack was bashed to death in the driveway of his home in the southern suburbs of Adelaide by Brett Stuart Williams and Lawrence Hersbach; police found McCormack's body in a grave at Owen on 27 May 1999. All three were small-time criminals involved in the drug trade.[39]
            • 20 May 1999 - The Snowtown murders were uncovered when the remains of eight bodies were found in six acid-filled barrels in a disused bank vault in Snowtown, South Australia, and the remains of two more bodies were later discovered under a brick rainwater tank stand at a Salisbury North property, bringing the total number of victims to eleven.[40]

AFM you're wrong. It's NOT THE GUN that is at fault and I'm sick and tired of hearing this garbage. The monsters who do this are sick, they are mental, and they will do harm with or without guns. They will use bombs, knives, or they might even skin and boil their victims isn't that right AFM? Banning semi auto guns will do NOTHING. I can pull the trigger on my 357 revolver as fast as you can with your semi auto, fact. It's not the fault of the gun, PERIOD.

Let's also keep in mind that the population of australia is less than one tenth of the USA. We also have a great neighbor in mexico with 27,000 murders in 2011. Can that number be correct? We better keep our guns and push to have every law abiding citizen trained in the proper use and carrying!!!

                        Re: Madness

I find it sad that in the midst of this tragedy we are having an argument in favor of "guns", what is wrong with us?

While it is true that "guns don't shoot people, people shoot people!" It is very wrong, and wrong-minded to fail to admit and recognize that "guns" make it very easy and very efficient to kill. That is the fact, nothing more.

BHD, Yes, all that you say is true, and obviously you spent some time looking that up for the post. But, isn't that pretty close to saying that "no body has been found to get diabetes while in the grocery store" or there is no evidence that people die from automobile accidents in the showroom?

I am NOT against owning guns, I am NOT for taking guns away from qualified citizens. But we absolutely MUST face the fact that these weapons are obviously finding their way into the hands of people who should never posess or have access to such weapons of efficiency for murder and mayhem.

I am of the firm believe that the NRA is far more interested in profits than they are in safety and security. Spending millions of dollars to defend everyone's right to buy, own, and use a firearm is certainly not the awareness, nor is it "Right"... even under the Consitution or the local law. It does make them a lot of money though!

As I said in another thread, the only way this is ever going to be remedied, is for the gun community itself to stand up and educate, restrict, and make the ownership and use of these weapons a "responsible" right

I have another hobby, (Amateur Radio) one which requires a Federal license. I'm one of thousands of certified volunteers who administer the necessary tests to obtain a license. It requires three people like me to administer that exam, three more to check the test, and three more to check and confirm the ID of the individual applying for the exam. Our equipment does not have any capability to murder.

In addition to that, we have a comminity of people, who monitor the on the air behaviour and who will earnestly and willingly track down and report any abusive behaviour that we find within our ranks. The hobby is a priviledge, but not a "Right". Most all of us who hold a license, know that priviledge, know how much it means to us, and know full well what it means to have anyone in come into our ranks and misbehave. To a large degree, we don't need any "rotten apples" to reflect on the rest of us. And with all that, there are still violators!

I don't think there is any way anyone can prevent murder by gun. But it would be damn awful nice if when these things did happen, if the pro-gun community would make an effort to stop the proliferaton of weapons to those who should NOT have them and stop defending everyone's "Right", regardless of their background, mental state, profit motive, or anything else.

We have way too much violence and far too much "selfishness" that says it's not my problem, it's my "Right" and therefore everybody's Right. I wish we could recognize the simple fact that it's not the government who you need to fear, it's people like yourselves, who also own guns... the difference is the fine line of "sanity".

I find it sad that there are people out there who actually believe that it's the guns fault. Wow, unbelievable. I also find it sad that they actually believe that by banning guns everything will be sunshine and beautiful.

                            Re: Madness

CWS, the NRA does a lot to promote the safe and proper use of firearms, among their members and the general public.
Unfortunately all you hear about is when they stand up for their rights, not when they do something to help protect the public.

I heard (but don't know if its true) that the guns used in this incident were owned by one or both parents. So how did the son get possession of them?
Doesn't sound like responsible firearms ownership to me. If the parents can't see a mental problem within their own child what chance does anyone have of spotting it?
But, we can't prosecute either parent in this case as they are both dead.

When I had kids at home, my guns were broke down and critical parts locked up in a separate location and ammo locked up in a third location all with user programmable combination locks that only I know so no keys to fall into the wrong hands. Now its down to keeping the ammo separated from the guns but still locked up. The dog will alert me with enough time to arm myself if necessary.

CWS, we wouldn't be having this debate if tony did not start it! I agree that guns do make it easy to kill someone, and at the same time I agree with others who say the killer would have found another way. He could have easily tossed a few fire bombs into several classrooms, probably killing more in a more painful manner. We need to have an intellgent conversation about gun control, responsible ownership, crime and punishment, and how we handle mental illness. All these things contribute to the improper ownership, posession and handling of fire arms, as well as our society's failure to punish criminals and diagnose and treat the mentally ill. Why is it people assume that by disarming law abiding citizens, guns won't find their way into the hands of criminals and crazies?
