  • Bastard file question

When you use a file on aluminum the file does fill up with the aluminum filings.

I do use compressed air and a metal file card to clean the file but often
I still have some aluminum debris left on the file.

Anyone have other tricks and techniques to clean a file, both the coarse side and fine side?

cant say it works but I am thinking that one time I read about rubbing a bar of soap on the file. also chalk has been used. soap stone, bees wax,

To quote the Aircraft Mechanics Pocket Manual: "As the file teeth point forward, the file only cuts on the forward stroke. On the return stroke the file should be raised slightly to prevent dulling the teeth. Note: In filing soft material such as aluminum, dural, lead, etc. the file should be drawn back over the metal as the teeth are cleaned on this stroke."
about the best discussion on the subject I could find and the quote taken from the discussion,

Soapstone is the trick I always used.

            Re: Bastard file question

            Thanks guys!

This is what I learned and what I have done.....

chalk up or load with soap stone...I'll try them both
I only draw the file in one direction, the forward stroke. I do not "saw" with a file EVER!
My file card is a "metal type brush" not a soft bristle type brush.

According to the site BHD indicated discussed a clever tip by lightly lifting
the file on the return stroke and lightly drag it across the material.
