  • Christmas at the orphanage

We have a large orphanage in the city. It's run by the Catholic Church and staffed by the nuns and volunteers. There are around 50 residents housed there most of the year. Most of the kids are between the ages of six and thirteen. Sister Margret says the younger ones get adopted pretty fast and a lot of the older ones move out in their mid teens. Every year at Christmas the local police, firefighters, EMT's and teachers from the district get together and do a toy drive and make Christmas dinner for them. Santa shows up and presents get handed out. For most of these kids the volunteers are the only family they have. If you ever get a chance to spend a day helping to bring some cheer into a child's life at what has got to be a difficult time of year for them, I highly recommend that you do.
