  • Obamacare, Thanks but NO Thanks!!!

My daughter turned 26 recently and my wife and I shopped for healthcare coverage since she is busy finishing law school. The "cheaper" plans ran around $300.00 a month, did not allow my daughter to keep her doctors and they had outrageous deductables, ($3000 for dr. visits and $15,000 for hospitalization. We decided to pay COBRA $1000.00 a month until my daughter passes the bar and finds a job. Don't ask me where or how we will afford this expense but it is the necessary and responsible thing to do. I still maintain that this economy cannot afford or sustain healthcare coverage as implemented under the AFC. I repeat "We are Doomed!!!".

I think you'd be better paying the $300.00+- monthly. Statistically you'll save the complete deductibles before needed.

Make your daughter a complete dependent and showing little income. Then everyone can pay for it. That's the magic plan anyway, isn't it?

Can't risk statistics. Hope she will only need our help for the next 6 months, and if she did have the less expensive coverage and need serious care we/she would be deep in debt. I mentioned my situation with this but the goal of this legislation and the actual impact to our economy are much more serious. I am confident my daughter will be employed and this will pass, I cannot imagine the situation improving nationwide.

P.S., I have no option of keeping her as a dependant, that ship sailed once she turned 26.

Isn`t it awful being dragged kicking and screaming into a civilised world where the weak and poor of ones country are covered with health insurance as other civilised countries have done for the last thirty years

As the enrollment deadline is today, it may be a little late to discuss this topic. Your figures sound very high even using my state of California as a reference. The ACA (Obamacare) annual maximum out-of-pocket for a family of any size is $12,700. So you would never reach $15,000 for hospitalization. And the COBRA rate of $1K sounds very high for a young gal of 26. Anyway, if I understood the news report today, you can still enroll/change your plan up until 4/15 when you work directly with an insurance broker or certified counselor in your state (at least for California residents, not sure about other states). There is no cost to you and they get paid by the provider. It may be wise to consult with someone like that to review your figures and options.

Tony, my friend, our challenges are much more complex than your simple jab. Unlike Australia, which is surrounded by water and has a natural moat, the U.S. shares a physical border with a large country that is NOT a good neighbor. They flood our states with illegal residents who work off the books (impacting real jobs and wages), send what they earn back to family in their native country (so the money isn't even spent here), and cause strife with crime, gangs, and other social problems. Now we're being asked to give them citizenship and subsidize their health care. It's a fair expectation to take care of your own citizens. But now we're being told to take care of our neighbors, at our own peril. This new health care law will be a magnet to make our immigration problem even worse.

I've never begrudged the weak and poor getting free medical care or any other type of assistance, which they have always had access to btw. It's the free loading, no-account lazy azzes that have made a lifelong career of sucking the government teat at the expense of working folks. The same people, who when offered a real job, turn them down so as not to lose their welfare benefits. A government that could care less about helping the small business person, but will be soon opening the floodgates to allow more freeloaders access to the ACA, EBT, ETC. We'll be paying so much in taxes, fees, assessments to pay someone else's way, that we won't be able to pay our own way.

Obamacare will help very few. Even if the poor get the premiums for free, they will not be able to afford the deductibles to get the medical help they need. So they will continue to go to emergency rooms and get the services they will not pay for in the end. Meanwhile the people who have a few $$ will pay through the nose and get far worse health care than they have now.

My BIL was forced into this junk insurance,
They had very good insurance, before, O care, destroyed it, now there deductibles are close to $15,000, per year.(all the deductibles they would have to cover them self's. a flat deductible, a co pay type and no drugs they use covered.) no coverage on the prescription drugs, all out of pocket,

yes it is a few hundred dollars cheaper a month, but My BIl all ready has new bills of over $15.000, do to his wife having some heart problems and spending a few days in the hospital, so the $1500 to $2000 a year in saving has all ready cost them about $13,000, and he is on a pace maker, and it need some expensive check up visits, there guessing there medical costs if no other problems will cost them an extra $10 to $15,000 a year,

We have been paying these peoples bills @ 100% all along because they typically go to the emergency room! get service and don't pay the bill which increases the health care costs for those of us that do pay the bill. What is different here is that those folks will have to start paying too. The bill doesn't give illegal aliens free health care.

My insurance hasn't changed under the new law. It costs me 12 grand in change yearly.

Children of illegals born here are eligible for most financial benefits. And the rest won't be illegal for long after the next wave of amnesty happens. I don't mean to sound like a hard a**, but we're exporting jobs out of our country and importing welfare cases. This will be our undoing.

You are not sounding like a hard a**! You are drawing a sensible conclusion given the loss of full time, good paying jobs and the increase in entitlement spending. Maybe folks like NHM can afford $12,000 a year for healthcare, but I can't think of many who can. I think it's perfectly reasonable to project we are doomed to crash and burn given the direction we are going. That's if north korea or iran don't take out our power grid with a simple nuke fired high in our atmosphere!

Covered California is a State run Obamacare program. Using Kaiser through Covered California, a visit to my GP, which I never use, will drop from $30 per visit to $20 per visit. However, my Specialists who I see several time per month will go from $30 to $40. Our family deductible will increase from $4,000 per year to $8,000 per year. None of our eye care will be covered but Brenda will have full prenatal and maternity coverage. Too bad her hysterectomy was over 35-years ago. Not to worry, our under age children (our baby is 34 years old) will have full dental coverage. If there is a saving grace to this whole thing, it is that the rest of you will pay $11,772 per year of my $21,972 annual coverage. Just which part of the Affordable Care Act is the Affordable?

Anyone born in the US is a US Citizen regardless of the status of their parents. I personally don't think that's right but that's how the law stands at the moment. So they by being an American Citizen are entitled to anything an American Citizen is including the ability to run for president - something naturalized citizens cannot do.
