  • Pergola construction

My wife wants me to build a pergola in the back yard. The design she's picked out has decorative columns (like you see on porches or stoops) instead of simple 4x or 6x columns. Other than the obvious expense considerations, I'm grappling with a method to secure the columns to the ground. I presume some sort of concrete footing with a rod or other tie would be used. I've done a quick Google search but was wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions.

Concrete footers and use strong ties to attach the columns to the footers. You do not want the column coming into contact with the concrete. After its built, trim out around the base of the columns to hide the strong ties.
