  • Toilet Gurgles

    I'm not a plummer,
I'm having this problem that when we take a shower in either bathroom the toilet gurgles in both bathrooms.
I've ran a snake down the shower drain and also in the two clean outs on the outside of my house. I also used drain cleaner with no help.

    Has anyone have any sugestions?

    Thanks Lou

I'm no plumber either, but it sounds to me like you've got venting issues.

In order for water to go down the drain, you need something to replace it through the pipes... which is air. Normally, this air is available from the vent stacks but if they're blocked, I believe it will create a vacuum and then pull the air in from elsewhere. In this case, it seems to be your toilets.

Wait for one of the plumbers here to provide a real answer, but I think this might be it. Have you checked the vent stacks yet?

if you are on a septic system may be time to pump, gurgling toilet is almost always a tell-tale sign of a backup

It is amazing how long it takes to complete a project you are not working on!

Is this on multiple floors?? It definitely sounds like a venting issue...maybe some leaves, or scale buildup in the stack before the bathrooms.. It may need to be snaked from the roof...

if this is on a slab...you may have a soft blockage, or partial blockage in the main line that may need to be water jetted...

If your on city sewer, I am going to go with a partial stoppage. Very rarely to do we run into vent problems.

Is there a mainline c/o on this line?? Best thing to do is run the showers and look down the c/o to see if the sewer is holding water.

Last time I ran into this problem it was due to a partial blockage of toilet paper, waste and water, about 2' in lenght just sitting in the pipe, like a poop milkshake.

I live in a 1 story slab home with 2 baths on the same floor. This a septic system.

            Thank for the information

LOL HVAC, hey, by the way, thanks for the reference on the web site.

Stop eating before you read on

This is the best way to explain it, and depending on how long it sits in the pipe, it can really dark and gray in color, it is weird, I am sure the guy's know what I am talking about, kinda like when the running trap gets a hole in the bottom and it builds up and sits, the toilet paper breaks down, but does not break down to nothing, causing this creamy, chunky milkshake.
