  • Noise/Vibration Reduction

I have a basement located 1.5" pvc sump pump discharge line giving me a lot of noise & vibration through the pipe hangers and amplified through 2x12 floor joists. Does anybody have any experience on this they could share? There are a lot of products out there for this problem and all are very expensive for much trial and error solutions.

Is your basement finished off where the sum pump discharge line runs?

If not, first try to strap/secure it the best you can.

Also, if it runs through joice's rather than down the bay, make sure there's some 'breathing room' if you will around the pipe, so when it kicks on/off it doesn't rattle against the joice.

Also, do you know what condition the check valve is in?

If the check valve is bad, the water that doesn't quite make it outside will flow backwards towards the pump and make a slamming sound.

      Sorry for 2 posts.

I had this once in a house down on the ocean, we replaced about 15' with 2" cast iron and that solved the problem. ABS / PVC will slam.

If your not up for the larger job, try to strap and brace it

Pipe size could be to small for the volume your pump's putting out.

Your pump could be going out and transfering the vibration.

Your check valve could be on the fritz.

When did you first noticed the problem?

            How bout that pump information?

Be sure the pipe isn't touching any ductwork. Do not strap it tight to the joist, this will just transfer the sound to the floor above. Wrap the pipe in a piece of 2" insulation before securing at each strap.
