  • modifying a bathtub.............

    OK Guys,
We have a leftover bathtub that was built in (3 sides) to the walls.
Question.........Can we cut off the front and most of the tile lip and convert it into a freestanding tub?
Anyone ever cut a tub; it is enamel over steel.
    Thanks,
    Chenchen.

That thing is going to want to chip and shatter along your cut.Even with the diamond blade on the grinder.

            The tub is steel.
            Enamel is in good shape.
OK so it will chip; we dont mind that as long as the chipping is confined to the immediate area of cutting.
We figured on putting a mahogany rail around the perimeter; this will dress it up and cover the horrible mess we will make cutting it.
What do we cut it with?
            Thanks,
            Chenchen.

you have the chance of it splintering all the way down.

I would use a diamond blade on a grinder if you are good with it and can keep it steady.

A sawzall with a diamond tooth blade may work, hopefully it does not viberate to much, you will shake it up and pull the enamel off the side.

Don't have any high hopes. let us know how it turns up.

wouldnt do it your asking no begging for trouble! do it right or dont do it all, pull the tub and go back in with the fixture designed to do what you need.

I say go for it. What do you have to lose? The tub is leftover, if you ruin it, so what. I would get some tape along the line and cut it with a diamond angle grinder blade. I would also paint over the exposed steel with some quality waterproof paint. Lets see some before and after pics if this looks out.

                        We solved the problem.............
Swapped the tub we wanted to cut for a used claw foot tub minus the feet.
So we are building a cradle for it.
                        Thanks for all the help,

Have them bead blasted clean. Spark plug guys might be able to do them; dont use sand.
You can spray paint them yourself; 1 coat latex enamel primer and 2 coats latex enamel; Cleopatra gold is in.
