    That didn't make much sense.

If it's a horizontal run, and the crack is pointing up, then no water will hit it, there for no leak.

It'd it's a vertical line, and the water rides the opposite side of the pipe of the crack, then no, it won't leak.

    What's a 'pm question' anyways?

yes and its only a matter of time until the scale and rust let go and it will leak, do yourself a favor and cut it out and replace it or suffer the consequences.

        i'm picturing a 4'' horizontal line with a split on the top that's 2'' wide x 15'' long.

yes i have. typically on a roof drain or planter box.

we did a hotel in 1991-92 and it's all the same pipe. all installed the same time. only the planter drains are splitting. not the waste pipe.

must be the fertilizers and lack of flushing that is the culprit

I have actually seen a brazed repair done on a c.i. crack. Can you inagine taking that much time to clean and braze the crack rather than cut it out?

Sometimes you have to wonder when you see some repairs. I believe often it has more to do with what they know how to do and the equipment available to them. I've seen where HO have welded leaks in galvanize pipe.
