Probably because he doesn't want to pay some unwashed plumber dude 95 bucks an hour, and have to look at his stinky butt crack to boot...
    Can you blame him?

I didn't work in the city either, but I assumed you did when you said, "us city folk". I don't know what a croton valve is? It sounds like something they would have at a large salad bar.

Well, I hope he doesn't have that prejudiced, cheapskate kind of attitude.

We're talkin' plumbers here, not carpenters.

A wood butcher with an opinion. Dangerous.

Maybe I came to the wrong forum. Can someone direct me to a forum where a person that is not a plumber can ask questions? I think I'm being misunderstood. People are giving me a hard time about the pan questions, but I want to know what professionals would do. Codes are usually the bare minimum. I know I could get away with no pan and running even a braided connection. That isn't the best way though. I'm not looking to just make it work, if you follow what I'm saying.
                  this place is pretty good.

Depends on your water quality, but Yes in most cases they are.

I decided to hard pipe it. Do you guys use tape and pipe dope (this is for the dielectric union)?

pipe dope on the female threads and about 4 wraps of teflon tape on the male threads

Pipe dope should only be applied to male threads.

                            Thank you

Is there any problem with just connecting the dielectric fitting directly onto the nipple that comes out of the water heater. I was looking through some pictures and noticed most people use a copper threaded to sweat fitting. They then go up 6" and add a copper union. I don't even see a dielectric fitting at all.

What do you do or did you do navysuit? Simple question since dozens of yours have been answered.
