  • Galvanized Pipe For Natural Gas?

There was a post on here earlier this week regarding problems with some black iron unions. One member said he used galvanized fittings. My question is: Is galvanized pipe allowed to be used on natural gas systems? I know copper will react with natural gas and eventually cause a major flaking condition inside the pipe, but I was unsure about galvanized pipe.

It depends on how your gas supplier treats before sending downline. We can use galvy.
The east coasters have a cow everytime we talk about this.Cause they can't.

the sulpher content is the issue with copper.

        gal. is legal here.

we had a job back in 1989 that was 544 apts. couldn't get black fast enough so the whole job was gal.

actually it was a smart call as the building is a block away from the beach and 1/2 of the piping is exposed in the garage.

wanna race in hand threading that pipe

Inspectors prefer it here. If you use black in exposed areas, you need some special bitiumous paint to cover the pipe.

Galvanized is a no go here.

No galvy here also. Along with close nipples, steel couplings, and cast fittings.

No Galvy here either. But we do use copper below and above ground

I never understood why close nipples are not allowed? Anyone know?

my area will allow you to pipe an entire house with yellow brass for natural / but its so expensive its not spec'ed very much / we mostly use galv for exterior locations and black for interior.

There is no visible section of pipe at the end of each taper to keep fittings from bottoming out on each other.

Back in the eighties we were getting busted for street 90s and bushings along with the close nipples and steel thread protector
                          couplings(no taper)
Now I look in the code and I can't find it.Has anyone seen anything in the UPC over the past 20 years.

                            Service Guy,

There's no spot for your wrench, meaning your wrench will tear up the threads, and probably leak.

Also you could tighten down into the fitting to far as there is nothing to stop you, and not leave enough threads left for the next fitting.

EDIT- My fault, just noticed your question was already answered.

Why would I ever put a wrench ON a close nipple??? When tightening close (or any short) nipples, you wrench on the fittings only. Young grashoppa!
