  • Can anyone answer this heating question?

TWO pipe heating system, to keep balance

    a) supply pipe long, return pipe short
    b) supply pipe short, return pipe long
    c) increase supply pipe (runoff)
    d) monoflow tee orientation

    Can you explain this?

    Thank you.

This question is from a plumber who took plumber's license exam.

        I am preparing the license.

The question is for hydronic heating system.

        Thank you.

If the answer is D then how can it be a 2 pipe system?

I always considered a Monoflow system as 1 pipe

I think we need more info

I guessed D first, but monoflow tee is used for single pipe system.

              how about B?

I think that it is B myself, but then again I am unsure as to what the length of pipes has to do with it

Steam is a single (or double) pipe system.
Monoflo's don't work real good on steam!

In other words, your question is too vague...to me at least.

I thought that steam was the ONLY real one pipe system, everything else has a supply and return. I Even with Venturi on MonoFlo tees that is still kind of a 2 pipe system because there is a supply and return! Right?

Thats my point, he states the question regarding Monoflo & single pipe in one question...I think he missed some details.

Re: Can anyone answer this heating question?

Mono flow refers to the direction of flow through the tee which is a venturi tee. As water is forced through the venturi it creates an area of low pressure on the back side (like a carburetor) and the resulting low pressure area pulls water through the radiator. It is a one pipe system in that one single large loop of pipe is usually run around the basement and 2 tees, 1 monoflow and 1 regular, feed and return each radiator. Been around a long time. I'll see if I can dig up a schematic and post it here. May have to scan it in if I cant google it.

Yes but compared to Steam which CAN be run with one pipe, as in ONLY one pipe from the boiler and the supply/condensate shares the same pipe, wouldnt the venturi system be more of a supply/return system. One would still have to use a circulator and Flow Checks with any of the others? Ok I change my Answer.... I say yhtat the 2 pipe system is Venturi or Mono Flow, Becasue any of the other systems is essentially just a loop, where as the Venturi system has the loop AND supply and return

We still service many one pipe gravity hot water systems.
