  • 10yo WH: change anode rod?

10 year old State Select 50 gallon gas WH. Working fine. I don't think the previous owner changed the anode rod ever. I wanted to change the anode rod but am balking for two reasons: 1) I read it takes a massive amount of torque to get it out; and 2) the hex head is hidden behind the vent and both water inlet and outlet nipples.

I read about the option of an anode rod attached to the hot water outlet nipple. Anyone tried it? Was it available in Home Depot or Lowes?

And more critically, is it worth the trouble to add the anode rod for this WH, given its age?

    Your advice are highly appreciated.

    Thank you.

I would leave it as the WH is toward the end of its life already and the damage has already been done! Not worth the agravation to change it out IMHO

I think I would replace it with a new energy efficient, tankess water heater.

This would then accomodate the evolution of our trade.

i have a torque multipler that will break it loose or a 3/4'' drive electric impact wrench.

even i wouldn't waste my time on a 10 year old heater.

heck my 20 year old state is still on it's original rod.

I am changing out a 30g from 1991 instead of chancing changing out the T&P. I told the owner it was their gamble but if it were my house it would be tiime for a new hwh. They agreed.
