  • Moen Kitchen Faucet Leaks at Base

I tried to help an older lady in our church fix a dripping kitchen faucet. I replaced the cartridge, o-rings, and diffuser on her Moen fixture. The dripping stopped, but after running properly for a minute, the water then all came flowing out at the base of the fixture. After several attempts of taking it apart and putting it back together, I finally reinstalled the old diffuser. The result is no flow at all. Did I re-install improperly? Is there soap somewhere blocking flow? Please help.

This should help... i am guessing witht the model of the faucet but all single handles are pretty much the same.... sounds like an o-ring isnt seated right for the leaking around the base as far as no flow from the diverter, check to make sure everything is in the right spot as per the schematic

I would tweak it using this tool.

        Wrench Spinner,

Thanks for the schematic, I will see if it works this evening. I did try putting the O-ring in two different locations at the base.

One higher, in the groove that I think it is intended to go into, and in a lower position, that would seem to make a seal, but otherwise does not seem like the right spot.

Can I post a photo on here to show you what I am talking about?

If it is a pull out spray faucet, it is an 875 series Moen and there's a backflow device that's defective.

I'm betting the horse and my first child that I'm right on this statement.

              Ok,

Thanks. Where is the Backflow Device? Is it the same as the collar diverter? I don't see anything labeled backflow on the schematic, unless it is an internal part of the cartridge?

I am also wondering if I didn't open a pandora's box of problems created by the not so wonderful plumber who did the original install. No offense to plumbers in general, but this particular one built this lady a bathroom on a platform, with no protection from the outside cold underneath. The pipes are repeatedly freezing. This lady was taken advantage of, and I am trying to help her out as much as I can.

any help you can give would be greatly appreciated

Identify the faucet on moens website and then check the schematic and go from there, the only facuets with the backflow preventer have the pull out head.

                  Ok Wrench Spinner,

I am going over now to try again. It does have the replacement cartridge similar to the one shown on the pdf that you sent me.

I don't know how I could have installed it diferently.

In my mind it could only be:

                  1. something down in the hole where the cartridge goes, blocking
                  2. the diverter is messed up
                  3. the O-rings are not in the right place.

there is an extra plastic ring with a cut in it, also shown in your pdf that goes at the base of the faucet. I wasn't sure exactly how this went on either.

will let you know how it goes.

Little blue rubber tit on it underneath the trim/spout?

Of course my wife was able to fix it on the first try.

I swear she didn't do anything differently than I did.

Here's to hoping it really is fixed.

                        Thanks for your help everyone.

                          Did wonders for my ego.

Let's just hope it stays fixed.

Thanks everyone for the advice (ie. don't use Moen next time)
