  • Brand New Sewage pump (SEP-500) just humming, not turning! Why?

My 6 year old sewage lift pump stopped working yesterday. I picked up a Ridgid SEP-500 as a replacement. I had everything ready to set the pump in placed and decided to run a quick test before lowering it down and hooking up the pipes. I placed the unit in a 5 gallon bucket, picked up the float switch and the motor just hums. The impeller does not turn. There is no blockage, but the impeller is VERY difficult to spin by hand. It was sitting in 10” of water leaving the top 1/3 above water. Do these units need to be fully submersed to operate?
How freely should the impeller spin when the unit is unplugged? It feels like it is so tight, the motor cannot get it to move. I’m considering taking the unit back for another brand. Any suggestions?

The impeller should spin free when unplugged, there might be an issue inside the pump I would take it back and exchange it.
