  • Friend just called. Water in clothes washer.

    It fully drained yesterday.
But now a few inches of water is in the tub.
He suspects a problem with his drain and put some drain cleaner down the pipe.

I suspect a leaking clothes washer water valve.
Suggested he shut off the HOT water line since it is less likely that sediment would get out the top of his water heater and get stuck in the clothes washer valve.
Then we will know if it is the COLD water valve and not need to take apart both valves.

    Any thoughts?

Should one shut off the water when done washing?

    Thank you,

    PlumBob

sounds like the water solenoid valve is leaking.

yes, you should always shut the water off to the machines when done.

the biggest insurance claim for residential homes are burst washing machine hoses.

the water solenoid valves are fairly cheap and are sold as an assembly, hot and cold. most are less than $20.00 for the set. while at it, change the hoses and flush out the lines before you reconnect.

now get back to your fart fan project for the wife

      Thank you, PlumbeRick.
I should see if I can attach extensions to the water valve knobs.
They are only 90 degree turn! A handle attached to the extensions would make it easier to reach in and push OFF and pull ON.
They are on the left side of a pedestal-mounted front loading washer and are covered by the washer. A little difficult to reach back and turn off.

Hope the "Fartfan" will work but I cannot find the hair dryer converted to vacuum.

A problem in the drain would usually result in overflowing of the stand pipe. but not leaving water in the machine.

So it could be the fill valve , but do not rule out a bad pump that is just not getting all the water. Take a look to see if it pumps all the way down, then fills back in.
