  • hammering and whistling sounds

I live in a 8 year old house and recently I have started to get some noises in my plumbing. If I flush a toilet and a faucet is going a squealing sound starts, and sometimes I get a hammering sound when the water softener is regenerating. If i open the PRV more the hammering stops but the pressure in the faucets declines. Any advice would be appreciated.

see if the sound is being generated from the pressure regulator. they do wear out and can chatter. check the pressure before and after the regulator too.

How do you check before the regulator? Can you just hook up something to a showerhead to check the pressure after?

usually there is a hose bibb before the regulator or a high pressure sprinkler connection. a pressure gage with a hose adapter can be found at home depot for around $10.
