  • Are vent stacks ever terminated in attics?

    Was it ever legal?

Someone discovered no soil stack or pipes coming out their roof.
Did roofers do that or was it built like that?

They hired a plumber who went in and made it right.
I'd take an educated guess - but I'm unqualified.
It ain't just soot, it's paydirt.

never legal as far as i know.

remember that the vent not only lets the sewer breath, it also vents the sewer gases, methane. so terminating in an enclosed space is not only illegal, it can be dangerous.

I had a house I was called out to locate the source of sewer odors. After checking all the normal simple causes, I told him the next step was peppermint oil poured down the vent stack.

We went outside to look where the stack was located on the building and did not see one anywhere. So he took me to the third floor and opened the access panel that led to an unfinished area and sure enough there is the vent stack a foot below the roof. Looks like some one forgot to finish the job. They ended calling the builder back to have it corrected.

It used to be a somewhat common practice in cold weather environments.

I've run into several over the years.

It's a great way to get frost inside your attic, as well as sewer gas.
