  • agitater not working in washer?

hey Guys, I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on this for me. you Guys have been spot on in the past. the washer (GE) goes thru all the cycles fine except for the agitater cycyle. when it hits this cycle it doesnt move at all. the motor just humms. I dont smell anything. could this be the clutch? any suggestions greatly appreciated. Glenn

this is not really a plumbing issue, though there may be some people in here who do appliance repair. I have had my own machine apart a few times, but am probably more dangerous than help with this one

If it is belt drive and the motor is spinning the pulley on the transmission then I would say that the transmission is the problem, if it is direct drive then there are drive plates with plastic tabs that tend to break off, this can cause a few different symptoms with the agitator - no movement, moves one direction, weak movement. Try the agitator cycle with no water and see if it agitates, you likely will have to fake out the water level and lid open switches.

Wayne, it is a belt drive. when I look at it with the cover off there is no monement anywhere during the agitater cycle. but again runs perfect for the spin. the machine itself looks almost brand new. when it was in the agitater cycle I even "pushed" the belt in the correct direction (with a flat head screwdriver) to see if it could move during this cycle and the belt moved freely from my pushing. belt is nice and tight and looks to be in great shape. could this still be a traney problem? If I remember correctly (about 20 years ago) on the belt drive the motor spins in opposite directions for spin and agitate. Look for the relay that reverses the motor
