  • Neighbor's poorly-flushing toilet fixed.

Mineral build-up on the flush rim water outlet holes was restricting water.
I cleaned all the holes out with a knife and their toilet flushes like new.

I suggested they replace their 1966 toilets with watersaver toilets.
I'd take an educated guess - but I'm unqualified.
It ain't just soot, it's paydirt.

5gpf is probably the selling point. The 1.6 might save water, but it provide as much oomph to move down the line as much.

          Santeen down the overflow tube.

I personally would try and keep that toilet!!! I've kept my mom's 3.5 gallon flush 35 year old AM Stan Cadet toilet going by using Santeen every five years or so for the last 15 years. (In the Minnesota metro area we get lime / calcium mineral deposits)

When I get calls for poor flushing water closets, I do the same and clean Althea flush jets under the rim. I use an old coat hanger and poke them clean. Then after that I close the seat lid, and open the tank lid and pour a quart of Calci-Solv down the overflow and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then flush it, it will flush like brand new.

i tackle the rim hole deposits a little differently. i dry under the rim as best i can with paper towels or an old towel. then i tape under the rim with duct tape. i pour a half gallon of white vinegar down the over-flow pipe and let sit overnight. this long soaking does a great job of dissolving the deposits and really improves the flushing action, and it's cheap!
