  • electric boiler

My friend has a 48x52 insulated pole barn(R45 ceiling--R19 sidewalls) with in floor heat. (electric boiler) The boiler is a wall mounted unit with three heating units in it and it is a piece of crap. He has already replaced two of the units (warranty0 and now one of those and the third is acting up. He wants to replace the boiler. Question is two fold. How big of a unit (Btu) and what brand do you recommend? Thanks, PK

Dump the electric, go gas. A buderus GB125 should handle it

      I am not a plumber.
But years ago worked on a pole barn. Great insulation!

Do you have gas at the pole barn?
Gas would require combustion air and venting.

I would get a smaller unit and work it harder rather than a larger unit worked less.
I'd take an educated guess - but I'm unqualified.
It ain't just soot, it's paydirt.

Gas is out. His whole house etc. is electric. We don't have natural gas available here in the boonies and propane is out of sight.

IT ALL STARTS WITH A HEAT LOSS CALC. !
You need much more info. for that. HVAC FORUM Has the software.
Not smart to start guessing on boiler size with out it.
            But I'm Just a dumb G.C.!
I can build anything You want , if you draw a picture of it , on the back of a big enough check .

What's the KW rating of his existing unit?

I installed a 22kw HUBBELL unit last week. I was actually surprised how much I didn't hate it.

I don't know the KW rating, but I will check and post back.

PC, I checked the boiler and it is 28.8 kw. Does that sound right?

                    28,800 Watts at 220 volts = 131 amps.

Yea, that sounds about right for that size garage. If my math is right it comes to roughly 100,000 btus. Assuming it's single phase and not 3 phase.

Slantfin makes a 28KW electric boiler--- made in America

If it were me, I'd consider changing to a small oil boiler if he has the room.

Maybe even go solar?...anything is better than a 28KW electric boiler

I tried to talk him into some unit heaters in the first place, but he is a stubborn German just like me, so I don't argue any more. FYI, it is single phase and RG, he has three 50 amp breakers in the panel for it. Thanks PC, I'll pass the info on.

How are 50-amp circuit breakers enough for 131 amps?
(I don't understand how it is supplied. Three circuits?)

RG, yes, three circuits--one for each heater.
