  • What is the lead cylinder on old bathtub drain line?

Hexagonal grab on lid to unscrew cover.

    Does it catch hair?

What does it look like inside?

    Thank you.

I'd take an educated guess - but I'm unqualified.
It ain't just soot, it's paydirt.

It's called a drum trap. It serves the purpose of any other fixture trap - the water seals the trap so methane gas cannot pass through the drain and to catch heavy objects that shouldn't pass into the DWV system.

okay here is a question, anyone have experience with a drum trap/stopper combo for a tub with no overflow?

You can see the stem and stopper in this picture (right next to the tub), which I assume is attached to a drum trap.

I have had no problems with drainage and the stopper seems to hold, but since I have the floor ripped up is this something that I should think about getting checked out?

I hear this setup is pretty common in NYC but rarely seen elsewhere.

Often called and applied as a anti-siphon trap. The deeper higher volume of water in the drum is less susceptible of being siphoned out by a drain or air vent downstream, resulting in a dry trap.
