Forgive my ignorance as I haven't been in the plumbing scene for the past 8 months but where is a hot water side on a water heater?

Silly question the hot side is located opposite the cold side of course.

Normally the hot is on the left side when the gas control valve is in the front. The top of the heater will normally have raised text labeling the hot and cold openings. The can't fail way to determine what's hot and cold is to locate which opening has the dip tube. The opening with the dip tube is the cold.

GE is made by Rheem. One difference...most HD models except maybe the 12 year...have the plastic drain valve. You have to be careful about in store damaged-in-handling.

The lowes Whirlpool are labeled as made by US Craftmaster, an AO Smith brand. The gas models have been the subject of class action lawuits and several THOUSAND internet forum and blog posts@!

Is there now water heaters with 2 places for an anode?

Do any residential water heaters or furnaces come with lo-NOx burners?
Would such burners lessen natural draft up the water heater center tube which cools the water 24/7?

Cleaning a chimney after dark in December, I warmed my hands over a furnace vent.
Neither the furnace nor water heater were burning.
Was amazed at how much heat was lost from the water heater. Additionally, that draft was pulling frigid air into the basement which replaced the air lost up the flue, chilling the basement.
I'd take an educated guess - but I'm unqualified.

typically the tank has a 3/4'' port for the factory rod at the top. then they also sell a hot water nipple/ anode rod.

Jay, nice pic!! That's why I put the anode in the hot side on all my water heater installs, even in the cities.

I've used a second anode rod on the Hot side quite a few times.
