  • Best guess as to what this is

This is inside my brother's garage. He bought the house a few months ago and has no idea what it is, but it gets in the way of his car. The house has natural gas and the previous owner claimed there were no oil tanks buried on the property.

Pipe vents to the outside wall.

Covered trap next to the pipe.

Opening of pipe from exterior wall.

That's a new one for me.

It's always interesting to see how things differ in other parts of the country.

Looks like a vent for the house trap.

The old timers put it there for a purpose ! Mistake to mess with it .
I can build anything You want , if you draw a picture of it , on the back of a big enough check .

Its the fresh air vent to the housetrap. Every house out here in my area has them nothing gas related at all.

Yep a running trap with a vent. Common out in Elgin, IL.

Thanks. I am guessing it is best to just leave it as is and deal with it.

we have some running traps here. none of them have vents, at least not anymore. you might put a test plug in it and see what happens. is there a vent through the roof? just a thought. breid..............

I will have to check on the roof vent. Out of curiosity, if I have him plug it, what would we be looking for?

Re: Best guess as to what this is

It is a whole house trap with an external vent. See picture below. Its original intention was to allow cooler fresh air in and as it becomes warmer it rises out through the roof vent. The double trapping of fixtures is not allowed by the state code here in NY. But some places are still requiring them. They where suppose to keep natural gas leaks and other explosive substances from getting into the structure. They are a guaranteed source of income as they get stopped up regularly. Pop the street side plug and hit it with a closet auger. I would not plug it off, it was intended to be open to the atmosphere.

Thanks. yeah the house is in westchester, it is a shame because it is kinda obtrusive in the garage.

True, it's a bit off the wall, but it doesn't look like it's more than 8 inches from the wall. It can't really be that big of an obstruction...

Where in Westchester, which town? If he is willing to chop up the floor himself to save some money I can either re-route the fresh air or recommend someone to get it out of the garage.

he is in larchmont, but I am sure he would opt to just leave it alone. if he keeps dinging his car he might change his mind though. problem is, the way his property is and the style of his house, it is probably in the only place it can be.
