can anyone explain how to remove the balancing spool on an old moen shower body. i replaced the 1200 cartridge and am only getting hot water now. i was able to remove the large slotted screw but only part of the balancing spool cartrdge came out. any help would be greatly appreciated.

try tapping on the end with a hammer. the piston is stuck and not moving. or soak in vinegar and tap.

the balancing spool is a piston and cylinder with tight tolerances. if it's old and has mineral deposits preventing the piston from moving inside the cylinder, tapping might free it up. or a good soaking in vinegar will dissolve the deposits.

once the piston is free to move, the water should flow evenly. of course flush out the valve throughly prior to reassembly.
