  • Plumbing snake stuck in main line

Hi, New to the board and am wondering if besides scoping the line, is there another way to locate a snake that is stuck in the 4" main? I have about 20' sticking out from the cleanout at the side of my house. Distance to the front yard cleanout- which I discovered after the fact because it was buried under the grass-is 60'. I suspect it is under the sidewalk at the front of the property which is another 20' for a total of 80' INSIDE the main. Plumber says the only way to locate it is using a camera however, the front cleanout is plugged with water. I am resigned to have it dug up and retrieved . Is that the only other option if a camera cannot be used due to the line being plugged with water? Thanks in advance for any info. BTW, 4" Main is ABS.

You can find a company that has the equipment and skill to "charge" the cable and mark its location and depth.

Keeping in mind that this only locates the cable, which may have exited the pipe at some point and turned. This is especially the case if you have very sandy soil and the person who was cabling it was using a small cutter or boring type blade on a machine with a self-feed mechanism.

Or, you could just have the company use their camera to only locate the impasse even if you can't see anything.

    Be well,

    Rich

As they already said, hook it up and yank it out. Why dig if you don't have too?

              Backwater valve?

I don't get the need for a camera. Seems you know where the end is.
I suggest drain cleaning specialist. Lots of Water. Lot more Patience.
              Yank only as last resort.

honestly, don't try tugging as it could rip out the abs plumbing and cause you lots of problems from the cleanout out.

depending on your track record and history of the line/ roots, the first thing to do is to clear the line and relieve the stoppage. once cleared the cable will probably come out by hand.

going there tomorrow. jetter in tow.

will take some photos and write a follow up.

hopefully a good jetting will clear the line and free up the cable.

                      wish me luck

                      rick.
