  • Hot Water Heater Temps

What temp should your hot water heater be? I always understood that 120 F was standard, but a lot of energy savers say that 120 F is too high.

    What's your opinion?

Anything below 120 is unsanitary and bacteria can form.

Water heaters use to be set at @ 130-140 from the factory.

We set our water heater very low to save money.

I have not measured the temperature, but it is not much warmer than what we use to take a shower.
Our gas bill has gone down withe lower temperature.

We sethe dishwasher to Heated Wash setting.

With lower setting, hopefully the constant draft up the water heater flue is lesstrong so less heat is lost 24/7.

I wish we could put a damper on the water heater flue to stop that constant heat loss.
Air drafting up the vent is also pulling fresh cold air into the basement, chilling it.

I'd take an educated guess - but I'm unqualified.
It ain't just soot, it's paydirt.

We've got our Rheem Tankless set on 120 and it's fine.

You need to keep the heater at 140 minimum to kill legionella bacteria which can breed in the tank if set to low. Then you need to install a thermostatic mixing valve to turn your outgoing temp down to 120. Click image for larger version
