It's Kohler - not sure where it is made. I looked more closely at the transfer valve cartridge and discovered a couple of tiny daubs of grease. I guess they must have intended to put more and somehow missed it. The tiny daubs were not enough to coat the inside of the body while turning plus I suppose they really should have manually coated the assembly before install.
Out of curiosity I monitored the temperature of the valve case just after sweating some of the nearby fittings yesterday and Rick was actually correct - in most cases the body was just warm but not hot, so sweating 6" or more away should in general pose no problem although obviously disassembling is 100% safe.
there are times too much grease will cause the handles to turn from a set position. just had a call on a grohe last week that the diverter handle would turn from 3 to 6 position. a new valve installation by others. of course the weight of a lever handle has some to do with it.
