If the valve is made in Europe use silicon grease. My Grohe rep told me a long time ago that heat proof grease does not agree with European rubber.

It's Kohler - not sure where it is made. I looked more closely at the transfer valve cartridge and discovered a couple of tiny daubs of grease. I guess they must have intended to put more and somehow missed it. The tiny daubs were not enough to coat the inside of the body while turning plus I suppose they really should have manually coated the assembly before install.

Good thing I opened it up.

It should be buna or buna-n rubber, not sure what the big deal would be?

Out of curiosity I monitored the temperature of the valve case just after sweating some of the nearby fittings yesterday and Rick was actually correct - in most cases the body was just warm but not hot, so sweating 6" or more away should in general pose no problem although obviously disassembling is 100% safe.

I often times hold an 6-8" piece of copper bare handed while I solder it but that's not the point. The steam generated....anyways.

Both ways have merits....either way is good IMO although I'm happy took it apart as I found the grease lacking so I can now grease it properly.....

there are times too much grease will cause the handles to turn from a set position. just had a call on a grohe last week that the diverter handle would turn from 3 to 6 position. a new valve installation by others. of course the weight of a lever handle has some to do with it.

Sometimes an overly loose packing nut....not on a cartridge of course.

Okay thanks - I will grease sparingly - will probably cleanup the existing grease and re-grease with the suggested Silicone grease.
