  • downstairs shower backing up when upstairs is in use

    Hello all,

My downstairs shower is backing up when the upstairs (directly above) is in use. The downstairs toilet starts gurgling before the smelly water backs up. It does not however backup when it (downstairs shower) is running.

Note: My upstairs toilet was clogged a few days before this started happening, but was plunged easily and worked afterwards.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

since the showers are stacked one on top of the other, we ca assume they share the same present day 2'' line or old days 1.5'' line. now the toilet is slightly higher in elevation and is a 3'' or 4'' line. if the toilet bubbles when the shower is run upstairs, the the 3'' or 4'' line is plugged or restricted. is there another first floor bathroom and is it working ok while this one is bad?

sounds like the main or the branch line serving this bathroom is clogged. probably will need to snake the shower too to get the waste residue to flush out after the main is snaked.

      Thanks Rick,

I have a guy coming out today to check it out...I believe you're correct.

I don't have another bathroom on the upstairs.
