That is the Robertshaw gas valve that American has been having trouble with !

So that said his problems could be one of the following

    #1 lint screens clogged
    #2 hi temp switch bad
    #3 gas valve bad
    #4 thermal couple bad
    or any combo thereof

Oh great. This is the same tank and valve I have.

Installed it 1 year ago, and now the pilot light won't stay on. I can light it fine and the burner comes on and heats up the tank.

However, the pilot light goes out after this, and I have to go re-light it to get hot water again.

Any suggestion on the order in which I should troubleshoot things? I am having a slow winter and don't have spare cash to get someone out to do it.

probably a bad gas valve. replace the thermocouple at the same time. call the company for new parts. they usually overnight them.

My wife called a plumber while I was out and he replaced the thermocouple.

The light seems to still be on, but I guess only time will tell if that was the real issue.

Strange though, you'd think that if the that is what was bad that I wouldn't even have been able to light the burner?

usually thermocouples aren't half-bad. you could light the pilot, but when the button is released the flame goes out. when the pilot coil in the gas valve sticks or is otherwise weak it is often as indicated as your symptoms - the pilot lights, the main burner fires, everything quits after it shuts off. Other more rarely found items could be too large of a draft or excessive backdraft (these are not usual).
