How does one know if the anode should be replaced?

At 12-years-old, save that money for a new water heater?

    Thank you.
I'd take an educated guess - but I'm unqualified.

They SHOULD be checked and replaced as they wear but if your w/h is 12 yrs, I'd wait for the next w/h.

I doubt if replacing it will hurt any thing, and most likely you will no have much more than a plug and a wire left on the old unit, if you do replace it and the heater goes in a short time , or so, you can always take it out and salvage it for a later time, on the new unit, who knows you may get another 13 years out of the old if you replace it,
