    I'm pleased.
this is a perfect example of how prices vary across the country. this price would be considered gouging in my area.

And around here that would be pretty well in line for most companies. Though There are several in the area that would be twice that. Some of the regional pricing is Wild

No, it's not rocket science, it's plumbing and unlike rocket science it requires a license.

Did you determine the expansion tank was ruptured before or after removing it? And how did you know it was ruptured ... did you see loose pieces of the bladder falling out?

It was pretty much completely full of water. Pushed down on the Schrader valve and water hit the ceiling. I knew it was bad, had it included in the original quote. Did NOT, however, know that local code now requires 1/2" nat gas supply - that came as a surprise.

That's an easy one. All you do is tap on the side of the expansion tank with a screwdriver or channelocks. Start at the bottom and work your way up. You will hear a louder "TING" where the air is and a very DULL flat sound where the water is. If you hear the dull sound all the way up it's water logged and needs to be replaced.

                Re: Need New Water Heater

I was at the PHCC trade show in Oakbrook, IL last year and State was showing an improved version of their Premier water heaters. Instead of the suction screen for the FVIR system on the bottom of the heater, they eliminated the FVIR system 100% by keeping the sealed combustion chamber, and installing snorkel for the fresh air intake. It draws the air in roughly 36" above the floor which meets the requirement of preventing flammable vapors from igniting. If you think about how the requirement of installing an old standard water heater in a garage has to be on a platform of at least 18" high to help prevent igniting gas fumes from the cars and stored gas cans. So this snorkel option far exceeds that requirement.

A few other improvements is the sacrificial anode rod is gone and replaced with a powered anode rod, it uses a small blower motor to push air into the burn chamber to get a better burn of the fuel.

There, I fixed it for you. Don't want anyone to get the impression that the anode rod uses a blower...
