  • Mixing aluminum with galvanized steel ducting?

Is it a bad idea? They're two dis-similar metals, which suggests they might corrode over time, but I'd be using them in conjunction with duct work, so it'd ideally be dry and salt-free.

    Any thoughts?

My intent is simply to reform some of the ducts that drop low in the basement to wrap around a large support beam. I'd like to effectively compress the ducts to be wider and less tall, so they take up less headroom vertically. Perhaps there's a better way to do this?

    Thanks,
    Jeff

Why not just go with rectangular duct where you are trying to save headroom?

Yeah, that might be the way to go... so use an adaptor from circular ducting to rectangle (like used to connect the air vent?) and go rectangular from there?

Is rectanglar ducting sold in standard sizes (ie, the size of standard vents... something like ~12x3"?)

      Thanks,
      Jeff

you will need someone to size it for you correctly, in your instance since everything is existing you are probably bes to have someone come in and custom bend your ductwork, that will save the most headroom.

Ask around to see if someone you know can recommend a good HVAC contractor

Area is area so just use pi R squared and figure out what a rectangular duct that serves your purpose. You could probably find some 10" riser duct and boots which are already pre-made and save some money.
