I use a task K3 japanese tool steel bar (exactly like vaughan's bear claw) I used to frame so I have that one and a task bar with a really big head on it and a rubber handle to dig out the biggest of nails. If you cant find task where you live buy the 12" bear claw from vaughan. Like drtyhands said make sure you can get one for diggin' out the spikes as that's what you will mostly encounter. By the way, you're in carpentry, put the nails close to the studs so that us plumbers don't have to dig em' out so much please! You would be surprised how much we use our nail-pullers and sawzalls to remove nails, not to mention having to switch to the ever so slow holesaw and grind it out!
End of rant, and good luck with your career and nail-bar purchase!
