  • Framing Nails

I'm having trouble finding an answer to this question. I live in Wisconsin and I'm going to be finishing my basement. I purchased the Ridgid Round Head framing nailer, but i'm having trouble figuring out what size nails to use for connecting the studs to the plate. I plan on nailing "up" from the plate into the studs @ 90 degrees.

I read in the Wisconsin building code, that it requires 16D smooth common or box nails. I thought 16D smooth common nails were the 3 1/2" .162 diameter nails. I cannot find these at HD or Mendards in Galvanized. I want to use Galvanized because i'll have PT treated plates in the basement. I can find 3 1/4" non-galvanized smooth common, but not the galvanized ones. Does anybody know anything about this?

Here's a link to the Appendix of the building code.

Page 106 discusses how to fastens studs, and the footnotes on page 107 explain that you need smooth common nails.

Can someone shed some light on this? Can I use smaller nails?
