  • "s" marks the spot

did a camera job in a neighborhood the other day that was built in the late 30's. as i was locating the issue i marked the spot on the sidewalk with a green dot. then i looked down and saw a "s" right in line with my mark.

wow, did the original contractor form the 30's actually mark the sewer laterals so i walked a couple of homes and spotted another mark with the "s". there were some areas with newer sidewalks that of course wouldn't have the original mark.

i've seen this in new tract work in the garages, especially with post tension cable. they stamp the concrete with warnings "post tension cable, don't saw cut or core" , "sewer"

it's very typical to see the gas co. scribe a "G'' on the curb to mark their underground location. but not an original stamp from day 1.

Are you saying that sidewalk is nearly 80 years old?

I might have to throw out the BS flag

I believe it only because California does not have the weather extremes..
That and the sidewalk outside the house I grew up in is at least that old and looks just as good in San Bernardino, Ca ( went back to see the old house 3 years ago)

          Okie

That's right. No salt on the concrete will keep it looking good forever. Amazing the condition of the concrete. Here, a whole different story and it looks rough.

I don't know that I have ever seen an S stamped into the concrete but most of the curbs out here and in Las Vegas are etched with an S for sewer and a W for water. My California home is 41-years old and I have all of the utilities and the surveyor marks on my curb still.

                    Re: "s" marks the spot

Some city sewers here are marked with a H/C (House Connection), some with an "S", on the curb, not sidewalk. This is a small percentage of sewers though.

Whenever I locate a city clean out and there is no marking on the curb I use my hammer and chisel to engrave the sidewalk with a "T". I do the same with clean outs around the house engraving on the slab. I always get customer permission.

                        i wouldn't b.s. you

the next house over had a newer sidewalk, but the one after that had the "s" mark too.

i'm going back there in a week or two. i'll pan the area and take some photos.

this was in santa monica, ca.

                          Re: "s" marks the spot

There are lots of old neighborhoods in the Los Angeles area that have a similar "S" chipped into the face of the curb by the old timers from long ago. There has been many a time that I also did a heavy scratching of an "S" as well. Maybe we should all start to revive this old practice. The gas company out here does it it when they trace out a main from the street to a property.

When I used to do tracks in the early 80's in SoCal it was common to see "S" for sewer and "W" for water marked on the curb. Sure helped out when tieing in the utilities at rough in time.
