  • Diagnosis quiz part 3

Had a service call last week, water backing up in tub.... 2nd floor bathroom,.. when you run the bath sink, water backing up in tub...

both bath sink and tub are connected to a drum trap w/ no access to it,.. tried everything to clear it.... no success.... have my Micro with me and there's an access panel behind the tub where I can use the Micro........

Other than the locating the drum trap what am I really looking for...

Hints. it's not a stinking root.

Well if your in the central part of the United States I would say that you stuck the Micro-mini down the access hole to see if the flood waters had receded or maybe you were looking to see if some one planted a Banzai tree in that drum trap seeing there not good for anything else. What happened when you flushed the toilet.

I think you have to have access to the drum trap. If this house has a crawl space, I would go under the house and cut the outlet line of the trap and snake it from there. Repair the line with a no hub.

I would say you were looking to see if they put flooring down over top of the access for the drum trap being a older home I would say it may have multiple layers over it.

T.D. I see it in the news your getting it pretty bad.. Have a couple of life vest if you need.... toilet flushing fine... not multiple layers but good guess.

G.J. 2nd floor bathroom, If it was on the first floor you could gain access below. your close.

Hint # 2 the drum trap is brass.

Plumber Rick..... the outlet line of drum ties into stack below closet bend, it's vented but would have to rip out wall to get access.

Why is the drum trap inaccessable? It's not in the closet behind the tub?

I like this game, test my knowledge and allows me to see what everyone is thinking. We should keep this going but I am stumped on this one.

I would look for the closest fixture and find how many floor joists are between them. That wil give you an approximate distance. I would then drill into the floor with a tiny drill bit until I hit metal. Cut the floor open and deliver the coup de grace.

G.J. The cavity I'm in is where the drum trap is, and the obvious answer would be locate trap, but what do I really need to know.

J.C. your hint is all the fixture's are white

What you really should be looking for is your ladder and sawzall to cut that drum trap out from underneath

your looking for where the tub /sink line ties into the main line to see if they put the fittings in right and if it is not back pitched
