    looks like the cable snapped off at the connector. this is fairly common as this is the point of most stress.

    remember that the cable has to flex and with the connector, cutter and cutters connector, this makes for a stiff section.

    i would put a new end on and chalk it up to wear and tear. as mentioned cut off a few inches to get to cable that's not tweaked.

    remember that 3/8'' cable is stiffer and less flexible than a 5/8'' sectional cable.

      The part number for the repair is rg91037,it is a larger piece of cable that threads over the cable.I order mine from north state supply,I think it costs about $ 33.Spread the last wind of the repair end with a chisel a little and grind the end of the cable a little and it will thread on easier.I use a mig welder to tack it in place,a small tack is all that you need.I have never had a problem with weakening the cable with the tack weld,just don't overdo the weld.
