  • IF I Could Only get one machine

HI, my name is josh and have been cleaning drains for about 4 years along with service plumbing. I just purchased a small work van to start doing drains on my own, and i need to know what machine or machines will give my the most bang for my buck.
Would a k-60 work for my company if I was only doing 4-6 main lines about 100 ft. How well does it work with smaller drain lines. What cable do you reccomend for the two different applications. Would i be better off with a big and small drum machine? And speaking of drum machines anybody familiar with speedway.

      Josh, welcome to the forum.

I would start going thru the Drain Cleaning Discussion and reading topics on this very subject.

This is a very touchy subject and opinions vary greatly to say the least. You will find several threads about this.

But then again, what do I know......i'm a drum guy.

Hey Done cheap, learn the trade first before you go out and try to make a living. If your doing this on the "side", start out with a $60,000 dollar trailer jetter and see how cheap you can do that. Maybe I will give you $150.00 to jet out 300 feet of 6" main. Is that cheap enough for you?

Drain, I asked a similar question about 2 weeks ago when I joined this sight, perform a search for your key word of choice on the search menu and you will have all the opinions and discussion you can handle.
As far as doing drains yourself, I am a firm believer that hands on knowledge is the best available but consider some of the liability that goes into going into business for yourself. You have been in this business for 4 years and how many times have you gotten a cable stuck, broke a toilet, tracked mud into someones house and had to have the carpets cleaned, or for lack of a better term F-ed Up it is nice having someone to back you up when these things happen, and they will.

Re: IF I Could Only get one machine

josh, this is an exact the thread from a year back.

a k-60 with both 7/8'' inner core and 5/8'' cable will do everything from 1.5''-6'' with roots.

now if you add a k-39 with dual auto feed, then you can get the ruff 1.5'' tub traps.

the k-60 is my go to machine and the k-39 is the quick and simple trap machine.

as noted, do a search and there is plenty of debates / discussions on this subject.

                  stick with ridgid, speedway is

Re: IF I Could Only get one machine

I do have years (6) of drain cleaning expeirence but have also done so with spartan machines, Im just looking to fill a niche in my market, where i wont need 60,000 jetters, huge yellow page ads, warehouse full of plumbing supplies, payroll 20 union plumbers to clean drains, therfore I can do drains cheap. And then theres the honesty and integrity after working for a franchise rooter company I seen that was missing. How long can a poor white boy last on fair prices, honesty, and hard work. I guess well see.

To each their own, both have pros and cons.

This is a Ridgid site so I would check out the Ridgid sewer machines. There's a wealth of knowledge here to back up your tool purchase.

I personally use a different brand of machine and prefer drum.

I'll give you a clue as to which brand.

It starts with a "G", and ends with an "orlitz"

When you're ready to get a camera though, I would only go ridgid seesnake.

I have for the most part at this monment as in 9:36am have gotten out of the plumbing business, though still doing work for family and close friends. Next week I expect the arrival of a brand new K-60 that I can hopefully use for most of my needs, and will be brought along when and if I ever decide to open a business back up. The k-60 will pretty much retire both my old Marco and General drum machines taht are each older than me. I like the compactness and versatility of the K-60, will I ever use my drum machines again i dont know. But I feel confident that my new purchase will handle 99% of my jobs such as leader drains, mainline stoppages and area drains (4" to 6")
