  • Customers that know it all?

Today, a friend called and told me about a septic tank he went to pump out. After pumping and cleaning the tank, the drain from the house was still plugged. My buddy gathered and stored the hoses and went to get a snake from his truck. Upon returning to the septic tank, he noticed that the homeowner had found a ladder and climbed down into the tank and had a steel rod for poking. Before my buddy, Jim, could get the words out, the homeowner took a big shot at the inlet pipe and was immediately blasted with 2 stories of waste held in a 4 inch line. The ensuing gusher knocked him down and you can imagine the rest.

The guy is lucky he didn't die in the tank. There can be very little oxygen in a septic tank. I'm sure all of you know this but don't ever enter a septic tank without confined space safety gear and training!!!

PS I think it's pretty darn funny too.

I had a poo bath once. I was locating a septic tank so we can remove it and install a new one. Well the tank was about a foot under the dirt and it was a rusted out old metal tank. I was using a rod just poking the ground really looking for a lid. Before I knew it I was up to my chest in poo with cuts all over my chest, arms and legs. It was about 40 degrees that day and the hose off and trip to the hospital in my boxers was great. Not to mention the three thousand shots I had to get.

Not to be technical but how do you get blasted with 2 stories of waste held in a 4 inch line when the waste would spill from the lowest flood rim?

If the tank was (the equivilent of) two stories below the lowest rim you could.

Re: Customers that know it all?

I could understand a 20' head but to say two stories of waste would imply two stories and all of the lines associated in a two story home full of waste. Like I said earlier I am not trying to be technical but I am trying to get a concept of how much waste we are talking. If you have 160' line at 1% the flow would be different than if you had the flow of a 20' head in a 20' line.

I don't think it would make much difference, your still going to need the hose when you get out of the tank, and maybe a tooth pick

Fellas, for the sake of argument, lets just conclude that all of the sink traps were plugged with grease and the lower toilets were jammed with that wonderful moneymaking Charmin. All I know is what I was told, I was not there (unfortunately). This customer is well known for being a J.A. I have been told by several that it could not have happened to a better guy!
