  • 2" Cast Iron Shower P-trap Clogged

I need some advice on getting my snake through a 2" cast iron p-trap. I wasn't able to make the bend with any of my Rigid Heads. Is some special required? The plumbing is about 50 years old, but in decent shape.

clarice, this is not a job for an electrician.

you need me to come there and bring my selection of ridgid drain cleaners.

either my k-39 with 5/16'' innercore and bulb cable will do the job.

or my k-50 with 5/8'' sectional and auger should do it.

here is the problem. the trap being that old can be the old durham style and is a very tight turn. still can be done, but not as simple as a newer no hub or plastic trap.

like i said, just send me the airline ticket and i'll take care of it

but you better hurry as i'm off to ohio to show the kids how to do it, fast.

    rick.

as long as i'm back by tuesday morning i'm good to go

I'm assuming the house is on a slab. Do you have something similar to what rick suggested?

I would be sending my son out to the van to get the 6ft closet auger

A kinetic water ram would work good here.

I have been using a small blow bag on the 2" CI under slab traps (HVAC condensate drains mostly.)

I have mixed results getting a 5/16" bulb or drop head to feed into them.

I bet a Water Ram would rock it as well.

Try to vacuum any debree out with small rubber hose. 7/8 dishwasher hose works perfectly on the end of vacuum size hose. And vacuum lose rust scale as u go. Good luck.

When I can get to them I treat them like drum traps and cut 'em out.
I have had a bear with the K39 through these.3/8 cable has been hopeless.
Like Rick say'ed...It has a very tight bend in it (Likely..)
and you have 50 odd years of scale and soap build up.Shoo away the snakes and crawl under the house with a sawsall and make nice to your old plumbing.

A lot of the 2" cast iron p traps around here have a clean out plug that is frozen in place right smack in the bottom of the trap. The rods like to get stuck at that point. If I could not use my RO-Pump or Water Ram, I end up using my K-50 with the small drum and 5/16 cable in it. I put a sharp bend on the end of the auger of the cable so when the rod makes the first turn I can position the auger up away from the clean out plug. It takes some practice but it can be done.

The first thing I would do is get a cutter and chop the end of your cable off so that there is no bulb then I would bend the cable so that it resembles what your pointer finger would look like if it were touching your thumb. Some times you need to start off with something on the small side before you attack with the big guns.
