  • So I bought the Ridgid Auto Spin and.....

I've been eye balling this thing for a couple of years now. Held off because of what others have said here. I usually listen to what you guys preach but not this time. Ok, it's a Harry Homeowner special but I really like the design. Ridgid could have done a little more with quality it to make it a pros tool also.

I bought a used one but it likely never worked out of the box, and once purchased, you can't return them to the store (at least that what it says on the box) I got it so cheap that it should pay for itself after 2 uses. The motor would run but the cable would slip with the slightest of tension. I've seen this complaint several times from others. Disassembled, tightened clutch, and reassembled in 5 minutes. All good.

Really wasn't looking to spend $300+ for the K-39AF just to clear the few tub and lavy stoppages I come across. Thought about buying another drum adapter like I had for my K-60 but thats really overkill.

    Pros
All plastic coating, so no scuffing up the sinks or tubs
One handed operation with the air acuated foot switch
    2 way Auto feed
    Decent torque @ 400 rpms
No mess with a guide hose

    Cons
Stock 1/4" cable a little flimsy
I prefer a closed bulb rather than an open retriever tip
Auto Feed feels a little sloppy, looks the same as K-39 but haven't compaired them side by side.
Only does up to 1-1/2" pipe. Still need the 5/8" cable for 2" shower drains
Looks like it came out of a 5 year olds toy box

Here is the pro version of the auto spin. http://www.ridgid.com/Tools/K40-Sink...e/EN/index.htm I got to use this machine I really like it a lot. I too own an auto spin, I was down at the girlfriends place in Lexington KY and her shower was clogged, so I went to the Home Cheapo and bought one of these. I was happy with the results. Only thing is I wish the clutch was a little stiffer and not slip so easily.

HA! I just bought a 5/16" cable but haven't put it in yet

I was worried if the clip would hold a bigger size, I guess not

Back to Ferguson on Monday to swap out cables

        thanks for the tip Ron

I cut the bulb off and spread the cable open a little to catch hair. I cut the cable shorter after every kink then I replace it when it's to short. I just plan on replacing them often. It's a good machine for what I use it for.

Maybe, just possibly, that after 14 years, the k40 has been redisigned and is better? Just a wild and crazy thought.
                Buy cheap, buy twice.
