The most expensive shop around me charges $189.00 and is considered a screw job. Lowest is $95.00 and average is $140.00.

$250 - $400 that's starting rates here. To be honest with you it still less than a 100 gallons of heating oil. So what are they complaining about?

Charging less does not mean more call volume it just means you have to work harder to reach your goals.

I'm $185 up to two hrs.
I just had a repeat customer complain the other day.
He's a repeat so he knows darn well what we charge.

I sent him the bill and he paid right off. No problems.
I called him 2 months later for an unrelated matter and he says "at that price for what you did, I'd be better off just getting a machine and doing it myself".

I said "well, with the condition of your line you might be right. Those are our prices and I charge you the same as everyone else".

The first time we worked for him, he had a machine in the back of his truck. Wait till he finds out I charge $1000 for cable retrieval whether I get it out or not.

We've been at $350 for 10 years...Used to be really high now it's really low

Most reputable drain cleaning companies here are $450-$600

but you can still find a donkey to do it for $150 on Sunday night though

Let everyone who reads this post learn a valuable lesson. If you over price yourself it will catch up with you and in the future you will have to work cheaper to stay in business. thats why this guy is charging 350 and most reputable companies are charging 450-600 in his area.

                Just an observation.

                    Re: crying over cost

My step kids grand ma call to price shop me. Laid it to me about how much it cost. I wasnt charging for after hour or the fact in 30 miles away. She never call back. Kid came home this morning and said my grandma spent all afternoon on the phone beating up plumbers. It still isnt fixed. I bet she has money for bowling, casino, smokes.

                      Re: crying over cost

If I get some blow back on price, I ask the customer how often they call a plumber. Many will not have any idea. So, I'll ask them, once a year, two years, three years. I often hear every couple of years. Some say 5 years or more!

Then I tell them to really think about it. They'll very willingly pay phone/cable $100.00-$200.00 every single month! I'm providing X, you pay me and don't have to see me again for at least a year. Lightbulb goes off over their head.

Just a way to close or get your point across.

So we should raise our rates because what others are charging around us?...there's a formula for success

You said every reputable company is charging way more than your boss does. Why work for below average pay? Would you go work for your bosses competition for 1/3 less money? So why is your boss working for 1/3 less money?

                              Re: crying over cost

Wha other conclusion should I have came to? Should I have posted your boss is stupid because he looses 200 bucks on each job?

You said at one time his prices were expensive. 350 was high. So now like 10 years later he is still charging 350 while other REPUTABLE companies are charging up to 600.00.

By calling the other companies reputable you validated them. So why is your boss lossing up to 250.00 on each job and your fine with it? You couldn't use more money? Why couldn't he charge more and pay you more if he doesn't need it?

SO he must have to keep his rates low because he has a lack of repeat business from all the high rates from the past.

                              I'm on your side here.

I took reputable to mean licensed and insured as opposed to a handyman in his pickup truck.
