  • Thanksgiving Day

Who's going to be on call that day. I will be, but that is by choice, no one else in my community does it. Its usually one of my busiest days of the year for emergency calls, and then there is the day after for those that absolutely knew that I wouldn't answer my phone on a holiday. I wish everyone on the forum a great thanksgiving day.

I am waiting by the Phone both days. Hope to get a few call on each day.
I do not really do anything on the holidays. therefore I might as well get some money for sitting home alone

Holidays are always good. I don’t like to have calls, but every time I have a call I always seem to get good tips..

I'll go if called. But It's going to cost them$$$$. To pull me from my family on Thanksgiving day. They can whine all they want what would they charge to leave their family to play in someone else's poop on Thanksgiving?

Charging less does not mean more call volume it just means you have to work harder to reach your goals.

              Here we go again,
I have 3 calls after 4 pm today.

              A with a crawl space
A home with sh!t pilled up to the roof inside
And a church with a 250’ run under a slab, last time it was a piece a wood from a remodel job.

I hope I’m home for turkey day

                    Re: Thanksgiving Day

Back in the good ol days Thanksgiving was one of our paid day off holidays for the crew but since someone had to be on call. (our on call schedule was for one week increments so the rotation was between three and four months) Anyways any job we did on a paid day off was triple time so sometimes the guys would beg to be on call. I remember one 4th of July where one of my techs completed 5 calls before 2:00 PM.

                      Re: Thanksgiving Day

I usually go down town Salem and dish up turkey dinners for the homeless. It's one of the most heart breaking things I have ever seen. Single mothers coming in with babies and families that have lost everything due to job loss and what not.

It's sad and sure there are plenty of alcoholics and druggies but a few years ago I reluctantly got dragged into helping pass out meals down town that night there was this girl she was 19 and just had a baby. It was really cold that night dropping into the 30's. I had watched her come in to the packed room and stand in line with her baby. She ate her meal and then left. I went outside to see where she had gone and she was on a bench. I went and sat down next to her and asked where she was going. She said she didn't know. That broke my heart...she told me her story she ran away at 18 from an abusive home and moved in with her boyfriend she got pregnant and he took off and she got evicted once she had the baby and couldn't work for several weeks. I offered her a place to crash for a few weeks at our church. I told her it's not much but there is a nursery with a crib and a cot and we will make sure there is plenty of food for the both of them. She said that would be great, I told her to wait there and I would have one of the girls helping out drive her over there. When I came back she was gone. I don't blame her she probably didn't trust me and with her background I can't say I would have either if I was in her shoes. Ever since then I work on Thanksgiving and not so reluctantly.

I am telling you this not for any recognition but some of you mentioned you have nothing going and plan on working. You might check around and see how you can help one of the local food shelters or a church serving meals. It's just not the helping others it's the helping yourself. I can't tell you how much joy I get out of doing this every year.

                        Re: Thanksgiving Day

I plan on taking calls till 3:00pm tomorrow. After that I'm off limits or I'll do it around 9pm, after I'm stuffed with turkey.

If someone I know, has used me before, I'll still charge more but I'll be charging a premium.

If I don't know someone that's in dire emergency...

                        Kitchen Sink >>> $250
                        Main Drain >>> $350
Main Drain and toilet has to be pulled >> $400

Clogged toilet, no other fixtures affected >> $200

Any of the above with attitude from the customer when I hit the door? $89 for thinking I'll put up with that nonsense.

Leave with a plate of food >> $20 off
Leave with a chance to date one of the fat relatives who lives in the basement with 4 kids, going to school at 38 to get a "good" job and makes pies >> Add $438.20 to the bill because it's going to be hell the next year you're there and you are doing that plumbing repair for free.

                            LOL!

I actually recanted a service call I did years ago.

They tried to fix me up with the girl in the basement...I said no.

                            Never heard from them again.

Definitely a good thing....especially since they was religious reciting scriptures before I got out of the driveway.
