  • Best Cutter For Soft Grease Blockages....

Got called out to a large Bar & Grill yesterday. No grease trap & a 160' run of 4" cast. Line was full of soft/tar like grease. Rodded through it 3 times with a doulble bladed 3" grease cutter and twice using a large spring retriever with my Spartan 300 with .55 cable. The first time I brought back about 20 mice. This line wasn't opening. Hooked up a flush bag and line opened right up. I then rodded through it two more times running a lot of water.

What would be the preferred blades and technique to properly open this gummy line using a drum machine ?

I like using a 2 blade cutter with lots of water first then a root saw with lots of water and that usually does the trick. I think that a jetter would do a better job, but I don't have one.

the 4 blade cutter will displace the grease the best. problem is it's a 160' run with only 1 c/o. unless you can wash the grease out while snaking, it's just going to pack against the walls.

that's why the jetter is the proper machine for grease.

of course if you have a reverse c/o that will access the line, the jetter could do it without a mess or backup of water.

I like to hook up about 5 sections of 1 1/4" EEL cable to my 3/4" drum cable. I have had some luck with the EEL bulb auger.

Augers work well in helping to stir up the grease. There are times I find duct taping a rag to the 3" cutter where you have two tufts of the rag sticking out each end that exceeds the diamtor of the pipe by an inch or so. This scours the pipe and helps push the blockage.

If the above does not work I fire up my small electric jetter. Which is very rare.

I think most homes should have the kitchen line Jet Cleaned (like my new term since most people don't know what a jetter is) Once a year to bring the pipe to a like new condition.

This first then a pressure bag has brought me success most times. A model C out to the main then run in reverse works also

Keep in mind the sectionals really shine on grease because of the faster rpms. The open wind cable also acts like an archimedas screw. I've seen grease oatmeal get "screwed" open. I prefer ridgid's 4bladed cutters on grease with lots of cold water, never hot.

I wouldn't want to clean the cable afterward

I've used the rag trick a bunch and it's never failed yet.

Then I pour down a few bottles of clearasil. It's great at absorbing oil ya know.
